DIRT HOLDS SECRETS

Poised here
beneath a sign promising fun and adventure
just over the horizon or so
waiting long and hard
ever hopeful
in the shadows and the light
and the dust so many things have turned to
by the side of the only road that matters
right now
digging down in dirt
absentmindedly
seeking relics of trips attempted before,
remnants of others counting
hours and miles,
traces of long gone pioneers.
