LEAP YEAR

Skipping along this back road
in the pitch black
so no one will witness
this rickety experiment
building up some human speed
working up the courage
to take a flying leap at the end of this February 28th
at midnight
eager to savor the difference of a 29th day
To breathe the early morning air of
something so rare
sticking one last piece in this puzzle of a calendar

Defying gravity just for a second
Offering this bold leap of faith
in the dark
then trying to pull off a perfect landing
and not sprain an ankle or fall on my face
dying to show this leap year the grace it deserves.
