Out in the road dark
My muse creeps up
whispers a first line
Steadies course.

Becoming freeway man
Which ways to be free?
All ways
With high price choices

THE ART AND LUCK OF HITCHHIKING
Thinking back to the reckless times of
Getting a ride
Little prayers and never giving up
Getting picked up
randomly chosen
Out of the blue
Felt like dodging a bullet or two
some nervousness
or even fear
or winning a bingo round
Some exhilaration and wonder
plucked out of the day or dark
out of weather
Oh so temporarily
taken under a stranger’s wing
Fate kicking in
as the minutes as the hours
tick and tock
Can’t help but have quiet gratitude too.
